A faster route to handcrafted results!
In the last few years, there's been a push to return to the roots of woodworking when every step was done with hand tools--from resawing lumber and planing it flat, to cutting joins and creating profiles. Working this way can produce beautiful results, but is it the best method for woodworking in the 21st century?
In Hybrid Woodworking, author and Internet woodworking personality Marc Spagnuolo offers a more efficient approach that combines the strength of power-tool and hand-tool techniques. The end result: You save time and effort while producing furniture that still has that stunning handmade look.
The Hybrid System
Hybrid Woodworking will show you which machines and power tools are best for the grunt work of furniture making. It will explain which hand tools are essential for fine-tuning. And best of all, it will demonstrate techniques for working flawlessly and efficiently with every machine and tool in your shop.
Making beautiful furniture can be immensely gratifying. By adopting the hybrid woodworking system you can get to that satisfying end result with less effort while enjoying every step along the way.

F-ing awesome as always!
Beautiful book, well laid out.
When I got this book, I was a 100% power tool woodworker. Frankly, before this book I never thought hand tools would work for me and probably wouldn’t have bought the book on my own. Thankfully, my wife knew I liked The Wood Whisperer, so she bought the book for me as a gift.
I’m glad she did, because I didn’t know what I was missing. Now a block plane lives in my apron and every time I use my router plane I think, “I am so glad I have this thing.”
Marc presents the material in a way that’s approachable for hand tool newbies like I was. I came away understanding the purpose of various hand tools, and had epiphanies about how they could complement my power tools. I finished the book with a much broader woodworking skill set and a deeper appreciation for what hand tools bring to the craft. (And even started following Shannon Rogers’ Hand Tool School- https://handtoolschool.net/about/)
The book isn’t just for beginners, though. It’s quite comprehensive. I still refer back to it and every time I come away with a new arrow in my woodworking quiver.
What really sets this book apart is that Marc is an incredible teacher. He has a knack for conveying complicated concepts in a way that makes it easy to understand. And it’s not a tool review book. He doesn’t just explain what tools to buy, but why certain feature, and approaches matter. That makes the book evergreen even as products constantly evolve.
Especially enjoyable was Marc’s trademark sense of humour and conversational style. If you want a dry, boring technical dissertation, this isn’t the right book for you. But if you want to learn in a way that’s engaging and entertaining, go ahead and click “add to cart”.
Oh, and buy it directly from Marc’s site if you can. He does make it available elsewhere, but buying from him will score you a signed copy. Other places also take a cut of the sales, so why not skip the middle person and let him keep 100% of the proceeds?
This is one of those woodworking books that actually changed the way I work in the shop. Marc does a great job showing how hand tools and power tools can complement each other instead of treating them like opposing camps. The techniques are practical, easy to understand, and focused on getting better results with less frustration.
Whether you’re just getting started or you’ve been woodworking for years, there’s something valuable here. I picked up several new ideas and came away with a much better understanding of when to use a machine and when a hand tool makes more sense. Highly recommended.
A perfect gift.
